The Guru In Happier Times |
A court in India is being asked to determine
whether a revered (and extremely rich) guru is dead or just in a really deep state of meditation. The Hindu spiritual leader, His Holiness
Shri Ashutosh Maharaj, died in January—according to his family. But his devotees have him deep-frozen (à la
Ted Williams)—convinced that he is simply in a deep
"Samadhi" (meditation) and are preserving his body for the time when he wakes up. Of course, control over the guru's $167,000,000 million financial empire
might be the real reason for the devotees refusing to turn the body over to family. Said one of the guru's aides, "
Maharaj...has spent many years meditating in sub-zero temperatures in the Himalayas, there is nothing unusual in it. He will return to life as soon as he feels and we will ensure his body is preserved until then." Uh-huh. The family has gone to court, asking for an investigation into his death and for his body to be handed over for cremation. Folks, we just can't make this stuff up.
